Trekking Tour East Sicily
from the Nebrodi Mountains to the jonian coast
This extraordinary route embraces the north-eastern area of Sicily, starting above the Tyrrhenian coast in Montalbano Elicona, (named "the most beautiful village in Italy" in 2016), and ends at Castelmola sul Mar Ionio, just above Taormina.
The itinerary takes you through lesser known areas of Sicily such as Argimusco, (the Stonehenge of Sicily), the Malabotta Wood with its centuries-old oaks and sensational views from which you can see the coast of Calabria on one side and the islands Aeolian on the other.
An overnight stay is planned in Floresta, the highest town in Sicily at 1,275 m. above sea level, nestled in the alpine landscape of the Nebrodi Mountains with a spectacular view towards Etna.
After Floresta, the itinerary follows the Alcantara river to the medieval village of Randazzo, known as the "Black City" and then to Castiglione in Sicily. You will have the opportunity to visit sites such as the famous Alcantara Gorges and therefore to be able to swim in the clear and cold waters.
You can choose a lower or higher path on Etna, which varies in length and level of activity, however both are set in a dramatic landscape, which allows you to walk on the petrified lava from the eruptions of 1981 and 2002.
At the foot of Etna, you walk through a fertile land where Etna Rosso, one of the most prestigious wines in Sicily, is grown and produced.
The routes are mostly easy to moderate in level, however there are two slightly longer and more demanding days.
Upon request, the tour can be shortened by 1 or 2 days.
Our luggage transfer service and digital and paper information on the routes will allow you to spend a holiday in complete tranquility and to discover a Sicily that will amaze you.
Important information
The walks:
The walks are on marked trails and although they are sometimes not well marked, they can be followed easily.
There are only very short sections of steep ascent, with mostly moderate climbs on trails. We try to balance the walks so that after a more strenuous day, an easier day follows with a shorter route.
A moderate level of fitness is required.
The accommodation:
There are different styles of accommodation (guest houses, farm holidays, small hotels) based on what is available in the area and also to provide an interesting and varied experience, thus giving a better understanding of the place and its history.
The food:
Authentic and unique culinary experiences are planned during the tour, using local and fresh products.
The Nebrodi mountains are famous for farm animals. The black pig cured meats, present only in this area, are renowned as well as the numerous varieties of local cheeses.
It is advisable to report if you are subject to certain allergies and if you are a vegetarian.
